The Purpose of an Immigration Consultant
An Immigration Consultant assists immigrants through the immigration process. Positions are available in many different areas including law offices, legal departments, community services and legal departments in various associations and businesses. Consulting can include assisting refugees, helping people obtain temporary status, family sponsorship and tribunal work.
Duration of the Course
The typical Immigration Consultant course consists of both class and internship hours. Total hours involved are 480 over a 24 week period. Students are also provided a 155 hour internship offering them the experience they need to be ready to take on a full time position when they graduate. This makes becoming an Immigration Consultant achievable within a very short time period.

Once the course is complete graduates are then eligible to complete the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) licensing exam and become Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants. The exam must be taken within three years of graduating from an accredited post-secondary institution such as Herzing College. This license allows graduates to provide consulting for a fee and open their own practice as an Immigration Consultant.

In practice graduates with a license can then provide many services including but not limited to:

- Refugee claims
- Family sponsorship
- Investor, Self-employment and entrepreneur advice and consulting
